For our AW’19 Collection, Qaum, we worked with an innovative material, Corozo (also called vegan ivory) from Ecuador. It is a completely natural and non-toxic product made from the tagua tree. The collection was showcased at Lakme Fashion Week in collaboration with the Ecuadorian Embassy in Mumbai, Keu International and Trafino.
After having previously worked with the Chedamangalam craft cluster in Kerala as a part of the rehabilitation initiative by Save The Loom during the Kochi Biennale in 2018, we chose to work with the same handwoven cotton fabric for our Pre-Fall ’19 collection, Aakar
Beyond Quilting, an international research project by Edith Rijnja, Harald Schole, Rucha Kulkarni and Quilt Culture, aimed to create an impactful exchange of ideas between traditional quilt-makers and Indian and Dutch designers. The project strongly stands by the idea of empowering artisans, supporting traditional handicrafts, creating awareness and providing a global platform to godhadi quilting.
Our installation for the project, titled Kamal, intends to capture the fragility of our ecosystem as well as its power of regeneration. Water based resin was used to create the installation, a material which traps post-production remnants in its transparency to depict their disposal within nature where they sometimes lie lifeless for time unknown. Our work wishes to channelize garment manufacturing waste of all kinds through innovation and upcycling as part of our contemporary design philosophy.
This project was supported by Pidilite, India.
